Project Overview
Where Delaware’s Sussex County once had zero inpatient beds dedicated to behavioral health, forcing patients and families to travel great distances for care, NK Architects designed a new 90-bed psychiatric hospital to address the full continuum of mental health care.
The new two-story, 93,000 SF, 90-bed inpatient/outpatient hospital in Georgetown, DE, features a 24/7 assessment and admission department to allow access to an array of services, including intensive inpatient care, tiered outpatient care, psychiatric programs and substance abuse programs — for children, adolescents, adults and seniors.
The inpatient wings provide a range of comfortable, open living spaces, including a central social day space, nourishment areas, quiet activity space, seclusion rooms, nurse stations, conference/charting/planning zones, laundry rooms and visitor/consult rooms. Between the wings are indoor recreation areas as well as secure, outdoor courtyards that can be observed from the adjacent corridors. An administrative core houses support and administrative services, a crisis center and admitting offices.
NK Architects completed programming, planning and schematic design for the facility, which received unanimous approval from the Delaware Health Resources Board in Georgetown.
