Ribbon Cutting Ceremony at Northwell Health’s Florina Cancer Center

On Thursday, October 12, 2023, NK Architects joined Northwell Health officials to open the doors of its new 40,000 square foot Florina Cancer Center located at the Staten Island University Hospital. This state-of-the-art facility is a critical component of the Northwell Health Cancer Institute’s mission to provide comprehensive treatment and care to cancer patients across the Staten Island community, which has the highest cancer rates of any borough in NYC.
This project entailed both the renovation of existing space as well as a vertical expansion resulting in a cancer center that integrates advanced technology unifying the full spectrum of cancer services for Northwell Health. The Florina Cancer Center will serve both adults and children and includes Medical Oncology, a Chemotherapy Suite, Exam Rooms, Cancer Administrative Offices, and a Radiation Therapy Suite. In addition, there is a separate 6-bay pediatric infusion unit adjacent to the 27-bay adult infusion unit. Our team collaborated with clinicians to re-examine their workflow to provide the best efficiencies and layout for supplies to be quickly accessed and restocked. Both units continue to increase patient safety and satisfaction while giving clinicians an optimal work environment.
With access to nature being the main design driver for this facility, our design team worked closely with Northwell Health to integrate daylighting and nature-based materials to encourage a comfortable healing environment for all patients. We are proud to assist Northwell Health in their continuing efforts to provide specialized care to the community.
